Course Description

Diploma in Agriculture Programme

ANSC 2101

Animal Health
(Pre-requisite ZOLY III) 3Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab A study of causes, treatments and control of the important diseases currently affecting small stock and poultry in Jamaica. The Case Study approach is used to give students practice in diagnosis of problems and in recommendation of solutions for actual clinical cases. Basic clinical skills such as vaccination and dehorning are covered.

Introduction To Horticulture
3 Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. (Pre-requisites : BOTY III) The study of principles and practices of Horticulture, plant growth regulations and their commercial importance.

PLSC 2102

Ornamental Gardening and Landscaping (Pre-requisites: BOTY III) 3 Cr. 2 Lec, 2 Labs - This course is an introduction to the planning, designing establishment, the types of landscape. Suitability of plants for landscape, tools and equipment and different categories of plants, Care of house plants, pests and disease management of ornamentals interior plantscaping.

Vegetable Production 3 Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab - This course provides students with hands-on experience in practical aspects of field and vegetable production. It also facilitates learning by observation and investigation based on trials and experiments conducted in various areas of field and vegetable crop production. PLSC 2104 Non-Tradition Crop Production Cr. 3 2 Lec. 2 Lab. (Pre-requisite BOTY III) This course is so designed to expose the student to the theoretical and hand-on practices involved in producing different non-traditional crops. The course emphasis practices such as; land preparation, propagation, establishment, fertilization, weeds, disease and pest control, chemical application, plant training, harvesting and post harvesting techniques.

Non-Tradition Crop Production Cr. 3 2 Lec. 2 Lab. (Pre-requisite BOTY III) This course is so designed to expose the student to the theoretical and hand-on practices involved in producing different non-traditional crops. The course emphasis practices such as; land preparation, propagation, establishment, fertilization, weeds, disease and pest control, chemical application, plant training, harvesting and post harvesting techniques.

Integrated Pest Management Cr. 3. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. - This course provides students with theories and practicals in integrated pest management. Topics include plant pathogen/disease and insect pests of economic importance; factors affecting disease development, spread and control methods; identification of pathogens, insects, nematodes and other pests; methods of assessing crop damage by pest; insects pest control methods; economically important weeds; weed control methods; safe use of pesticide.

Turf Management (Pre-requisite successful completion of year 1 (one) studies.) 3 Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. - Establishing new lawn, maintaining the lawn, renovating the lawn, pest and disease management.

MATH 1101

Agricultural Mathematics 3Cr. 2 Lab. 2 Lec. - This course exposes students to specific mathematics principles involved in applied agricultural disciplines such as dairying, feed and fertilizer formulation, quantities in building etc.

ANSC 2102

Swine Production Practices: - 3Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. - Applied physiology related to pig production; veterinary problems and solutions; nutrition; breeding; housing requirements; processing of animal products; special marketing requirements; processing of animal products; special marketing requirements and management practices relevant to Jamaican Agriculture. Basic skills required for day - to day - operation of swine enterprises: Castration; injection of iron supplements, measuring rectal temperatures, vaccination, meat cutting, back-fat determination etc.; sanitising of animal houses and examination of animals for ill health etc.(Prerequisites: Completion of all lower numbered courses in AGPT). ANSC 2102 Small Stock (Sheep and Goat) : Cr. 3 2 lec. 2 Lab - Essential knowledge required for operating sheep and goat enterprise: applied physiology; Veterinary problems and solutions; nutrition; breeding; housing requirements; processing of animal products; special marketing requirements; processing of animal products; special marketing requirements and management practices relevant to Jamaican Agriculture. Basic skills required for day -to day - operation of sheep and goat enterprises: Castration; nursing management; sanitising and examination of animals for ill health etc.

Poultry Production: Cr. 3. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. - Essential knowledge required for operating a poultry enterprise: applied physiology; veterinary problems and solutions; nutrition; breeding; housing requirements; processing of animal products; special marketing requirements and management practices relevant to Jamaican Agriculture. Basic skills required for day - to day - operation of poultry enterprises: brooding, litter management, detection of non-layers, slaughtering and evisceration and storage of chicken etc.(Prerequisites: Second year standing)

ANSC 2104

Pasture Management : Cr. 3. 2 Lec. 2 Lab - This course is a study of pasture management, which includes calculating, taking samples and evaluating standing and reaped forages, grazing planning, weed management and control, calculating stocking rate and carrying capacity, fertilizing and manure application, soil and tissue sampling and nutritional hazard of pasture.

Soil and Watershed Management 3 Cr. 2 Lec. 2 Lab. Pre-requisite CHEM 111D). This course is intended to exposes students to the concepts and importance of soil and water management in Jamaica. It focuses on factors contributing to soil loss, methods of soil and Water Management.

Soil Science 3 Cr. 2 Lec. 2 lab. (Pre-requisite CHEM 111D). This course is intended to introduce agricultural students to the study of soil science. It focuses on the origin, formation, structure, properties and functions of the soil as a natural active body in which plants grow; the chemical nature of the soil and the relationship of water, air and organism of the soil mass. AGMK 2201 Agriculture Marketing Cr. 3 Lec. 3. Designed to introduce basic Agricultural Marketing principles and their applications to marketing problems in the Agricultural Sector.

Field and Vegetable Crops 3.0 Cr. - 3 Lec -
Identification of important field and vegetable crops, economic importance, production practices, pest and disease control, adaptation, distribution, fertilizer application and effects of the environment

ENTR 2202

Entrepreneurial Studies Cr. 3 3 Lec.
Translation of the theories of marketing into practical ideas and techniques that promote successful marketing practices in small business.

AGPT I 1101

Livestock Cr. 3 This course provides basic training in the care and management of pigs, poultry, cattle, sheep and goats kept for commercial purposes. Pasture development and maintenance is also covered.

AGPT II 1202

Crops Cr. 3 (Pre-requisite: Satisfactory completion of AGPT I 1101) This course provides basic training in production of field, orchard and vegetable crops as well as ornamental horticulture and landscaping.

AGPT III 2103

Crops Cr. 3 (Pre-requisite: satisfactory completion of AGPT II 1202). Provision of hands-on experience in management livestock enterprises. Activities include farm planning, budgeting report writing, input supply management, processing and marketing agricultural goods.

CIEP 3201

Cooperative Internship Education Programme: Cr. 8 Designed to provide students with work experience in agricultural establishments and agro-industries. It includes eight (8) weeks of study, observation and practice. (Pre-requisite: Senior Standing).
