Associate of Science Degree in
Natural Sciences Programme
Launched in Academic Year 1997-98 in keeping with
its mandate as a multi-disciplinary institution,
CASE’s Associate of Science Degree in Natural
Sciences programme blends theoretical knowledge in
the pure and applied sciences with hands-on skills
in standard laboratory practices, procedures and
techniques.
Career Options
Students graduating from this programme may
enter most jobs requiring knowledge of and practical
science process skill. Some options are laboratory
technologist, education, telecommunications, and
field officers in a variety of disciplines. In
addition, graduates are equipped to do further
studies in a variety of areas, some of which are
Engineering, Medicine, Meteorology, Environmental
Science, Ecotourism, Nutrition/Dietetics,
Information Technology, Pharmacology, Veterinary
Medicine, Bioinformatics, and other disciplines
within the Life Sciences
Articulation with Bachelor’s
Degree Programmes
CASE’s Natural Science programme now articulates with Bachelor’s
degree programmes at the three local universities.
In the academic context, articulation refers to the
movement of students from one level of the education
system to another level, usually from a lower to a
higher level. CASE submitted and gained approval (in
February 2001), for articulation purposes, of the
Associate Degree in Natural Science Programme by
Northern Caribbean University. This approval of the
programme means that Natural Science graduates of
CASE, with at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of
2.25, will be exempted from Years 1 & 2 in NCU’s
Bachelor’s programmes in Biological Science. This
follows on the previous approval by The University
of the West Indies in March 2000 (required GPA of at
least 2.5). The University of Technology, also, has
approved our programme by granting graduates
advanced placement (exemption from related Year 1 &
2 courses) into four degrees – Bachelor of Pharmacy;
B.Sc. in Environmental Health; B. Sc in Dietetics &
Nutrition; and B.Sc. in Medical Technology - in
their Faculty of Health and Applied Science.
One of the significant benefits of these
articulation agreements is that students will be
able to complete the first two years of their
Bachelor’s degree at CASE and then move on to the
university of their choice to complete the remaining
two years, at significant cost savings. This
arrangement exemplifies the “2+2” model, in which an
Associate Degree represents the first two years of a
related Bachelor’s Degree.
With the high and increasing demand for tertiary
education in Jamaica, having a fully articulated
tertiary sector is a policy position of the Ministry
of Education, Youth & Culture.
Options: All students do Mathematics in
year one, along with two other science subjects,
plus the general education courses. In year two,
students are required to choose and specialize in
TWO science subjects, which will be complemented by
general education courses.
Electives: Students are required to do 6
credit hours of electives chosen from the following:
Bioinfomatics, Biochemistry, Discrete Mathematics,
Internet Technology, Medical & Anatomical Physics,
Science For Development, Aquaculture, Food
Processing Technology, or other approved courses.
Cooperative Internship Education Programme (CIEP):
8 Credits. This internship last for eight (8)
weeks, and commences at the end of the course of
study. Students are placed in firms or other
organisations where they are exposed to authentic
work settings and real-world work experiences. While
on internship, students are assigned specific tasks
or projects. They are supervised by both Faculty
Members, who visit them periodically to offer
counselling and guidance, and make assessments, as
well as by personnel within the organizations. At
the end of their internship, students are required
to make a formal oral presentation as well as submit
a written report, which form part of their
evaluation
