ECOT 4101
Ecotourism Concepts & Practice 3
This course is designed to provide an overview of
Ecotourism - an enlightening nature based tourism
experience that contributes to conservation of the
ecosystem, while respecting the integrity of host
communities - so that students may have an
understanding of its conceptual underpinnings as
well as its practical dimensions. Topics to be
covered include: overview of Jamaica's Tourism
Industry; the role that leisure plays in
contemporary society; trends in global, national and
regional travel; motivation for travel, activities
preferred and benefits sought; and Jamaica's
biological, physical and cultural features that may
be exploited for benefit from Ecotourism.
ECOT 4102
Cultural Issues in Ecotourism 3
This course entails an examination of cultural
diversity in relation to tourism and hospitality, to
develop an awareness and respect of one's own and
other cultures in order to provide culturally
sensitive ecotourism services. Characteristics,
expectations and barriers of diverse cultural groups
are examined and skills for effective cross-cultural
interactions are developed such as inclusive
planning, communications and negotiations.

Adventure Tourism & Special Events 3
This course aims to empower students with skills for
successful outdoor recreation and adventure tourism
programming in relation to major community and
national events and festivals.
ECOT 4204
Foreign Language 3
SPAN: Functional Spanish: This course will cover the
basic lexicon and structures of Spanish with
emphasis on communicative language use in relation
to personal experiences and social and professional
interactions.FREN: Functional French: This course
will cover the basic lexicon and structures of
French with emphasis on communicative language use
in relation to personal experiences and social and
professional interactions.

Entrepreneurship 3
This course is designed to develop understanding of
the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the
entrepreneur, and to develop the skills required for
the practice of successful entrepreneurship in
Ecotourism.
ECOT 4206
Ecotourism & Sustainable
This course examines the social and political
processes through which groups and individuals work
to establish relationships and mobilize resources to
fulfill community ecotourism needs. The role of the
leisure service provider and development of the
necessary skills and knowledge necessary to
contribute to the community development process are
emphasized.
